BioMedical Transporters is a Harvard Medical School based series of international conferences. It was established in 1998 by its founder, Dr. Matthias Hediger, to promote the commercial exploitation of membrane transport proteins.
The first BioMedical Transporters was entitled "Membrane Transporters: New Perspectives in Drug Delivery and Drug Targeting" and held on the Monte Verita, Ascona, Switzerland, from August 8 to 12, 1999. The second conference, BioMedical Transporters 2001, was entitled "Membrane Transporters: From Identification to Drug Discovery" and was held in Interlaken, Switzerland, from August 5 to 9, 2001. BioMedical Transporters 2003 was entitled "Transporters and Drugs" and was held in Pontresina, Engadin, Switzerland, from August 17-21, 2003.
The target size of BioMedical Transporters 2003 was 200 participants. The focus was on transporter-based drug discovery strategies, pharmacokinetics, drug delivery, drug elimination and medically relevant transporters as drug targets. As before, BioMedical Transporters 2003 was held in an attractive mountain resort, Pontresina-St.Moritz, Engadin. The participants consisted of a mixture of scientists from the US (~40%), Japan (~10%), Europe (~45%) and other countries (~5%). About half of the participants were from industry and the rest from Universities and other Academic Institutions. Participants had an opportunity to interact with the world renowned leaders in drug discovery in this pharmaceutical sector, while enjoying the relaxing mountain area of the Engadin and its surrounding mountains.
